In the interest of public safety, the RCMP is warning the public about the release of a federal inmate in the Charlottetown area. Dennis Joseph O'Brien, 43, originally from the Summerside area, was released from the Springhill Correctional Institution on Sept. 9. Later the same day, O'Brien was taken into custody and charged for making threats. Today, the new charge was dismissed and O'Brien was released on a recognizance. The release from RCMP reads, "At the present time, the RCMP has reason to believe that O'Brien poses a significant risk to public safety. The RCMP is issuing this public notification to enhance public protection across the province, after careful deliberation and consideration of all related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform members of the community of the release of Dennis Joseph O'Brien." O'Brien is described is a Caucasian male with black hair, brown eyes, is 178 cm tall and weights 81 kg. He is originally from the Summerside area. Police do not have information as to where he is planning to relocate at this time. Anyone believing that a crime has been or is about to be committed is encouraged to call police.
